California Democrats are boldly defying their own party's plea to consolidate their gubernatorial race, insisting that the power to choose their next leader rests solely with the voters!
Just a day after the California Democratic Party issued a strong call for candidates lacking a "viable path" to step aside in the state's critical race for governor, the crowded field remains stubbornly intact, showing no signs of shrinking. This defiance sets the stage for a potential clash between party leadership and the democratic process itself.
With at least nine Democrats vying to succeed the outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom, and no single frontrunner emerging, a significant concern has surfaced: the sheer number of candidates could inadvertently pave the way for two Republicans to advance to the general election in November. This is the part most people miss – how a crowded primary can actually help the opposition!
Rusty Hicks, the chair of California's Democratic Party, voiced these concerns in an open letter on Tuesday. He highlighted the "unlikely" but "possible" scenario of a Republican victory and urged candidates to "act in a responsible manner with the opportunities and support we have earned." Hicks emphasized the importance of a "candid assessment of the political landscape" and the "courage to make a tough choice," suggesting that candidates without a clear route to the general election should consider not running in the primary and be prepared to suspend their campaigns within the next month if "meaningful progress" toward a win isn't evident.
But here's where it gets controversial... The distinguished lineup of Democratic contenders includes notable figures such as former Secretary of Health and Human Services and State Attorney General Xavier Becerra, former State Lawmaker Ian Calderon, San Jose's Mayor Matt Mahan, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer, Congressman Eric Swalwell, State Schools Superintendent Tony Thurmond, former Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa, and former State Controller Betty Yee. On the Republican side, the field features Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and conservative political commentator Steve Hilton.
Recent polling from the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California indicates the race has bifurcated into two main groups. Steve Hilton, Katie Porter, Chad Bianco, Eric Swalwell, and Tom Steyer are in a close competition for the top spots, while other candidates are trailing. It's worth noting that the state's Democratic Party did not officially endorse a candidate at its recent convention, though Eric Swalwell garnered support from approximately 24% of delegates, followed by Betty Yee and Xavier Becerra.
The candidates themselves have not taken kindly to Hicks's letter, arguing vociferously that the ultimate decision-making power must remain with the voters. Tony Thurmond stated, "Bernie Sanders was right. Our political system is rigged, corrupted by the political elites, the wealthy and the well-connected." He further asserted, "The California Democratic party is essentially telling every candidate of color in the race for governor to drop out." Betty Yee echoed this sentiment, telling Politico that voters are weary of "insider political theater" and "the drama, the pollsters and the powerful elites." Similarly, the campaign for Matt Mahan declared, "voters choose the next governor – not political gatekeepers."
Hicks, however, defended his position, acknowledging that his suggestions might seem "overly harsh" but are crucial for ensuring a Democratic victory. He also pointed out that a Democratic loss in the deeply "blue" state could potentially "imperil Democrats’ chances to retake the House." Even Governor Newsom expressed understanding for Hicks's letter, noting that "there is some concern" about the current state of the race.
