Coastal Carolina's Coaching Search: New Candidates and Rising Stars
The Coastal Carolina coaching search, which has attracted widespread interest, is nearing its conclusion with the emergence of two new candidates. Multiple sources have revealed that the final round of interviews took place on Wednesday morning, and a decision is expected within the next 24 hours.
In addition to the previously mentioned candidates, including Clemson's Garrett Riley, Missouri State's Ryan Beard, and Navy's Drew Cronic, two new names have recently entered the fray: Nick Rolovich and Shannon Dawson.
Dawson, who was also a key figure in Tulane's coaching search, was reportedly asked to interview and met with Coastal Carolina's team in the past 24 hours. Rolovich, on the other hand, joined the process later and has also been linked to the Sacramento State head coaching vacancy.
Rolovich's coaching journey is an intriguing one. He led Hawaii to 18 wins in his final two seasons before taking the helm at Washington State. However, his tenure there was cut short due to a controversial decision. Rolovich was fired after less than two full seasons for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine, a stance that led to his dismissal.
This season, Rolovich took on a different role, becoming a senior advisor for the Cal Golden Bears under Justin Wilcox. He has since been promoted to interim coach for the Hawaii Bowl, where his team will face his alma mater, Hawaii.
Riley, another prominent candidate, has been in deep discussions with Coastal Carolina. Sources confirm that he is a strong contender for the top job at the Chanticleers. Riley's offensive expertise is well-regarded, and he has been in multiple discussions with the team.
Dawson, a rising star in offensive coordination, has also made a strong case for himself. His work with the Miami Hurricanes' offense has been remarkable. Last year, he helped Cam Ward secure a Heisman Trophy finalist spot, contributing to Ward's selection as the top overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans.
This season, Dawson's strategic brilliance has propelled the Hurricanes into the College Football Playoff as the No. 10 seed. His collaboration with transfer-quarterback Carson Beck has been particularly noteworthy, as Beck has reduced turnovers and achieved a career-best 75% pass completion rate, a significant improvement from his time at Georgia.
Despite the impressive work of these candidates, Coastal Carolina's previous head coach, Tim Beck, faced challenges. After leading the program to three consecutive bowl appearances, Beck's teams struggled in the following seasons, losing 13 games and finishing with a 20-18 record under his guidance.
As the search nears its end, the university is poised to make a decision that will shape its future success. The emergence of these new candidates and the rising stars in the coaching world adds an exciting layer of anticipation to the process.
