The study, published in the journal Astrobiology, focuses on a rock sample collected by NASA's Curiosity rover in March 2025, which contained small amounts of decane, undecane, and dodecane.

These compounds, the largest organic molecules discovered on Mars, are hypothesized to be fragments of fatty acids preserved in the ancient mudstone of Gale Crater. On Earth, fatty acids are primarily produced by living organisms, but they can also be formed through geological processes.

The study's key finding was that non-biological sources, such as meteorites impacting the Martian surface, could not fully explain the concentration of organic compounds. This led researchers to propose the intriguing possibility that living organisms might have played a role in their formation.

To reach this conclusion, scientists employed a multi-faceted approach. They conducted lab radiation experiments, used mathematical modeling, and analyzed Curiosity's data to simulate the rock's exposure to cosmic radiation over approximately 80 million years. This simulation revealed that the organic material present would have been significantly more substantial than what non-biological processes could typically produce.

The team emphasizes the need for further research to understand the rate at which organic molecules degrade in Mars-like conditions. They caution that any definitive conclusions about the presence or absence of life on Mars cannot be drawn until more data is gathered.

The study's findings spark intriguing questions about the potential for past or present life on Mars and highlight the ongoing scientific exploration of the Red Planet.
