A groundbreaking discovery has emerged from Deakin University, revealing that a daily dose of peanut butter can be a powerful tool for older adults to boost their muscle strength and reduce the risk of falls. This world-first clinical trial, led by the university's Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), offers a simple yet effective solution to a common challenge faced by the aging population.

The study, titled "Older Individuals after Nut Supplementation" (COINS), published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, showed remarkable results. Over six months, older Australians who incorporated a heaped tablespoon of natural peanut butter into their daily routine experienced significant gains in muscle power and protein levels without any weight gain.

Associate Professor Sze-Yen Tan, who led the research, emphasized the practical benefits of peanut butter for older adults at risk of falls due to muscle weakness. "Exercise and resistance training are great, but our study shows that peanut butter can be a powerful ally in this journey," she explained.

The study involved 120 community-dwelling adults aged 66 to 89 years, all living independently but considered at risk of falls. Half of the participants consumed 43 grams of natural peanut butter daily, while the other half maintained their usual diet and lifestyle.

At the end of the trial, those in the peanut butter group performed better in the five-time sit-to-stand test, indicating improved muscle power. "This means they can do everyday tasks with more ease and less risk of injury," Associate Professor Tan added.

But here's where it gets controversial: the study also found that the increased protein and unsaturated fat intake from peanut butter did not lead to weight gain. This challenges the common perception that high-fat foods always result in weight gain.
