The Sheffield Steelers have bolstered their defensive unit with the signing of Canadian defenceman Macoy Erkamps, marking a significant addition to their lineup for the 2026-27 Elite League season. Erkamps, a 31-year-old veteran, brings a wealth of experience to the Steelers. His journey in professional hockey began in North America, where he played 137 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) and 122 in the ECHL over six years. This foundation laid the groundwork for his transition to European hockey, where he has since made a name for himself.
In the DEL, Germany's top league, Erkamps made 41 appearances with the Iserlohn Roosters, showcasing his adaptability and skill. Prior to this, he spent two and a half seasons in Sweden's Allsvenskan, playing for both Västervik and AIK. These diverse experiences have not only honed his skills but also contributed to his versatility as a player.
Fox's enthusiasm for Erkamps is evident in his comments, highlighting the player's competitive spirit and defensive prowess. "Macoy is coming in with a real appetite to win and plays with a willingness to do whatever it takes," Fox said. "He competes extremely hard and will fill a shutdown role against the opposition's top players."

"Macoy skates exceptionally well and will really help our transition game with clean exits and good reads through the neutral zone," Fox explained. "He’s also someone who knows when to jump into the rush and support the attack."
Erkamps himself expressed excitement about the opportunity, citing the growth of hockey in the UK and the positive feedback he received from friends who have played in Sheffield. "I’ve always been a defence-first player," he said, "but I enjoy joining the rush and helping to create offence when the opportunity is there."
The Steelers' acquisition of Erkamps completes their defensive group for the 2026-27 campaign, adding depth, experience, and a strong presence at both ends of the ice.
