A Legend's Final Curtain: Ling Xiao's Legacy and Struggle
The passing of a musical icon has left a void in Singapore's entertainment industry. Ling Xiao, a name synonymous with the vibrant music scene of the 1970s, has bid farewell at the age of 75. But here's where it gets controversial: his journey, marked by resilience and talent, also highlights the challenges faced by aging artists and the impact of health issues on their careers.
Ling Xiao, born Tan Choon Huat, found himself partially paralyzed in 2022 due to a stroke. This event, coupled with a history of health struggles, including hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes, led to his gradual fade from the spotlight. His sister, Jeci, who cared for him in his final years, shared insights with local media, painting a picture of a man battling multiple health issues.
Initially managing his diabetes with medication, Ling Xiao later transitioned to insulin injections. His career, however, took a turn when he had to withdraw from a concert in 2021 due to a fall and a subsequent head injury. This incident, coupled with a blood clot discovered by doctors, led to surgery and a series of health complications.
In 2022, Ling Xiao underwent dialysis and suffered a stroke, resulting in paralysis. Despite adopting traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, he refused physiotherapy, believing it was too late for a 'restart'. Jeci revealed that Ling Xiao's health deteriorated further, leading to repeated hospitalizations, bedsores, and even the amputation of his toes due to poor blood circulation.
And this is the part most people miss: Ling Xiao's battle with pancreatic cancer. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, doctors gave him six months to live. He chose to spend his remaining days at home, away from the hospital.
Ling Xiao's career began in his late teens, with a second-place finish in a singing competition organized by Rediffusion. This led to a contract with Happy Records and the release of his hit song, 'Ku Qing Hua'. His breakthrough came in 1998 with the drama 'Facing The Music', ending a period of singing in small bars. He went on to star in several other productions and served as a mentor on Mediacorp's 'Golden Age Talentime'.
His 50-year milestone in the industry was marked by a concert in 2017, where he performed songs from over 100 Mandarin albums. A year later, he joined the cast of the musical 'Taru', showcasing his enduring talent.
Ling Xiao's wake is being held at Block 116A, Bukit Merah Central, with his funeral scheduled for December 17th.
