Tributes pour in as Birmingham councillor Waseem Zaffar dies
Tributes have been pouring in for Waseem Zaffar, a beloved senior councillor in Birmingham, who passed away at the young age of 44. Zaffar, a dedicated Labour politician, had been a pillar of the community since his childhood in Lozells. He represented his ward since 2011 and held several key positions on the city council, including leading the introduction of the Clean Air Zone, a project he was deeply passionate about.
Zaffar was also an avid supporter of Aston Villa FC, known for his dedication to serving others. John Cotton, the leader of Birmingham City Council, described him as a "passionate advocate for his community, a father, a husband, and a young man with so much more to give to the city he loved."
The impact of his sudden passing has been profound. Labour MP Preet Kaur Gill expressed her shock, highlighting Zaffar's deep commitment to his community. She said, "He cared deeply about his community, working hard to serve others. My heart goes out to his family, especially his young boys, at this devastating time. A proud Villa fan, he will be greatly missed."
Zaffar's dedication to environmental issues was notable. He founded the Clean Air Justice Network and advocated for reduced pollution levels across the city. He was often the one answering questions when the city council introduced the Clean Air Zone in 2021.
Councillor Saima Ahmed remembered Zaffar's readiness to offer help and support, emphasizing his deep belief in equality and his consistent advocacy for the community and his colleagues, regardless of political differences. She said, "His loss is felt deeply - the community, his friends, and all of us who had the honor of knowing him. We have lost a leader, a voice of integrity, and a kind-hearted friend."
Zaffar's contributions extended to various committees, including Sustainability and Transport, and Neighborhoods. He was also part of the Safety Advisory Group, which faced criticism for the decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from Villa Park. His cabinet posts included transport, equalities, and social justice, though he stepped down as equalities chief in 2017 after facing criticism from the government integration tsar.
Despite their differing views, Conservative group leader Robert Alden acknowledged Zaffar's deep care for his local community. He said, "It's awful to hear this news, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this horrendous time."
The loss of Waseem Zaffar has left a profound impact on his friends and colleagues. Labour MP Sarah Coombes expressed her devastation, saying, "I am devastated at the loss of my friend Waseem Zaffar. I can hardly comprehend it. My heart breaks for his family, and Birmingham has lost a true and devoted son."
Independent MP Ayoub Khan, who had political differences with Zaffar, paid tribute to his respect for the community he served. He said, "We may have had political differences, but I had a lot of respect for Cllr Waseem Zaffar. He was truly passionate about the community he served. I'm deeply shocked by his tragic passing today. He will be dearly missed. May Allah grant him the highest maqam in Jannat-ul-Firdous!"
