Henry Agg's Tips for Gardening on a Tight Schedule
Henry Agg's new book, The Weekend Gardener, is a treasure trove of advice for busy gardeners who want to maximize their time and create a beautiful garden. Henry, a former executive recruiter at Hewlett Packard, found his passion for gardening rekindled when he and his wife Allie bought their first house in Brighton. With a desire to transform their garden, Henry embarked on a journey to learn landscaping and design, all while balancing his demanding job.
Henry's journey began with a simple idea: to share his knowledge and experiences with others who share his passion. He started a social media presence, posting videos of his gardening endeavors, and quickly gained a following. Recognizing the need for further education, Henry obtained RHS Level 2 qualifications and a design course from the English Gardening School. This led to the founding of his garden design company, which now offers full landscaping services.
In his book, Henry emphasizes the importance of effective time management. He argues that creating a beautiful garden doesn't require dedicating five days a week to it. By allocating a few hours on weekends and managing time efficiently, gardeners can achieve impressive results. Henry suggests creating a project plan, breaking down tasks into manageable chunks, and focusing on one task at a time.
Here are some of Henry's key tips for time-poor gardeners:
- Time Management: Be honest about your available time and the time required for each task. Create a project plan with specific timelines for tasks like building patios, borders, paths, and features.
- Weekend Jobs: Depending on your available time, some tasks can be completed in one to two weekends. Don't feel pressured to work every weekend; pace yourself to avoid half-finished projects.
- Short Time Slots: Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable slots can be more effective than prolonged periods of activity. This approach keeps you focused and prevents overwhelm or boredom.
- Bookending: Completing a short task at the beginning and end of each day enhances your sense of accomplishment and boosts your mood. This can include basic tasks like watering, weeding, pruning, and deadheading in summer, or sweeping paths, mulching, and greenhouse maintenance in winter.
- 20-Minute Sessions: These intense, focused sessions are perfect for busy individuals. Divide your garden into sections, choose a task, and concentrate solely on it. This approach keeps you grounded and prevents feeling overwhelmed.
- Alternating Tasks: Alternate between tasks you enjoy and those you find tedious. For example, Henry prefers making compost to weeding, making the process more enjoyable.
- Shorter Days in Cooler Months: During shorter days, focus on shorter stints of gardening. 20 to 40 minutes each day at the weekend is ideal for tasks like pruning roses or planting bare-root shrubs.
- ‘Power-hour’ Slots: If you have an hour to spare, set a timer and focus on one task or a selection of short jobs. This approach is efficient and can be a great alternative to the gym, providing exercise and calorie burn.
- Longer Sessions: For slightly longer sessions, take on more time-consuming tasks like building raised beds, lattice plant supports, or planting hedges.
- Enjoy the Process: Henry emphasizes the importance of balancing work and leisure. Take time to enjoy the fruits of your labor and appreciate the beauty of your garden. Don't let gardening become a chore, but rather a source of pleasure and relaxation.
